Water is important for any kind of living being. It is vital part of both environment and our body systems. It covers three quarter of the earth’s surface. Water intake is important for survival. Drinking ample amount of water reduces health problems and gives good health. But unfortunately ground water is being contaminated by dangerous chemicals, bacteria, organic materials, flushing of few medicines. Ground water becomes unsafe and unfit for consumption when oil, pesticides, gasoline, insecticides, few chemicals, chlorinated solvents, herbicides, storage tanks, septic system, landfills, hazardous waste, atmospheric contaminants, acids, cooling water, degreasers, paints, sewage sludge, inks, rinse water and waste process solutions get into ground. Storage tanks contain chemicals, gasoline, oil can be either above or below the ground. If the tanks corrode or crack the contaminants leak out and cause ground water contamination. Septic systems are designed to drain away the human waste. If the system is not designed, maintained, constructed or located the system can leak various types of bacteria, viruses, chemicals which contaminates the underground water and causes serious health problems. Diseases like hepatitis, dysentery are caused by the septic tank waste. The house hold garbage is buried at a place called landfills. There should be a protective bottom layer to prevent the contaminants entering in to ground water. If the layer is cracked the contaminants make their own way into the ground. Sometimes ground water gets contaminated naturally. Arsenic which is a toxic material is generally found in the rocks of United States. This can pollute the water that exceeds the safe level of drinking water. Few ways to prevent underground water contamination are as follows. Most of the people unknowingly flush the medicines. But flushing of few medicines which contain hormones and antibiotics can seriously contaminate the ground water. So it is better to ask the pharmacist about the disposal of medicines. Try to replace the toxic substances with either non toxic or less toxic substances. For example few inhalers contain chlorofluorocarbons. So stop or reduce usage of that kind of inhalers. Always try not to dispose the items which contain hazardous materials like mercury, PCB. Don’t spray the agricultural products like chemicals near open water which is very dangerous for the aquatic life. Use water based paints. It is better to recycle the waste paints, oils, brake fluid, grease, oil filters, transmission fluid and chlorinated solvents separately. Use hot water because it is better solvent than hot water. Use non toxic inks free of heavy metal pigments.
